Past to Present

Raised in and around centers devoted to art and spiritual practice, as a kid, living in the Siddah yoga Ashrams of  New York and Oakland California, Dahvin Bugas and his brother eventually landed  in the eclectic multi-cultural art mecca of Santa Fe, NM in the mid 80's.
"The moniker, Gone Beyond was created specifically for a collaborative concept project with  Mumbles,  titled Spirit Evolution Via Awareness (or S.E.V.A)  which was released on L.A's Mush Records in 2005" Dahvin explains. "Although it isn't the only psyudonym I release music under, it just kind of stuck"
Derived from the Tibetan mantra “Om Gate Gate Para Gate Para Sam Gate Bodhi Swaha.” In translation the mantra or prayer means “Gone, Gone, Gone Beyond, Gone Beyond the Beyond, In Complete Enlightenment.”

At age 13, Dahvin and his brother Daniel took an interest in the Ensoniq ASR-10 sampler after their Dad  purchased himself one with the intention of recording chants and mantras. His first explorations into the world of sampling were driven by the vast and obscure  collection of new age, spiritual, psychedelic and world music cassettes that were floating around  their dads bohemian garage. "My brother and I quickly hijacked the ASR-10....The first remix I ever made was of 'Om mani padme hum'...I was 13 at the time, those types of  tapes were laying around everywhere, Hearts of Space, Constance Demby, Swami Muktananda, Steve Roach ect, this was my first introduction into digging, before I started collecting funk, jazz, rock, fusion ect."
Several years later during the tail end of hip hops golden age years of the early to mid 90's,  he started digging for breaks on vinyl, and formed a production team which launched the Santa Fe rap group The Unknown in 1995..At that time he went by the stage name 'Dabadawikid' or Daba for short and produced 4 full length albums during that period. The Unknown consisted of 5 MC's and a DJ, and they headlined shows across the Southwest with hip hop legends such as DJ Q-Bert, The X-Men, The Living Legends, Z-Trip, and many others until they disbanded in 2001. It was around that time that Gone met fellow producer Mumbles ( Ullas Matthew Fowler) in Santa Fe, who had recently produced the highly acclaimed stone cold rap classic for L.A. lyricist 'Aceyalone titled 'A Book Of Human Language. "Right off the bat, Mumbles and I shared a similar interest, direction, and  production style. We both come from a similar upbringing, connected to the Amma Center, and we both worked on the Asr-10 , so we naturally started bouncing ideas back and forth on floppy disc". The first collaborative effort they jointly completed was S.E.V.A. released on Mush Records in 2005. A few years later they were invited by Cut Chemist to debut and perform remixes of Russian classical music at the Walt Disney concert hall along side a widely respected roster of peers Cut Chemist, Amon Tobin, DJ Spooky, J Rocc and Peanut Butter Wolf. The material they remixed became a full length LP 'Notes From The Underground.'

Since then Dahvin has continued developing a sound rooted in  feeling, exploring inner moods and  emotive expressions with honesty, continuing in the linage of sampling artistry which has its roots dating back to  the early 60's and artists such as Terry Riley, and the BBC Radiophonic workshop's  explorations in tape loops .

" I like to think of my work as excavating, recontextualizing and upcycling  lost and neglected sounds that have slipped through the cracks of pop culture, its quite  alchemical in nature working with sounds that have been previously recorded, but were never received by a wide audience.. Like any musical pursuit this requires a serious commitment. Fortunately I have a few friends that work at places like the dump, thrift shops, and record stores who look out for me when lp's and tapes come in. Its magical in the sense that these old obscure works find a new live when combined with others in a new form , even when its just an obscure element, there is a depth and history bringing a deeper mystery into music. There is a deepness to it that is different from playing my drum set, guitars, flutes or keyboards"

With  vinyl releases  on  L.A's Content Label, Denver's Natural Records, Germany's  Equinox Records, Japans Tri 8, L.A's Mush Records, and collaborations with Cut Chemist's ' A Stable Sound' as well as his own 'Transfer Station Records' label, a steady underground momentum continues to grow for the New Mexico based Beat-smith. Revealing elaborate loop-based compositions, and experimental arrangements,  he forges forward, dedicated to honing in on his craft with deft technique by releasing music under several different monikers. Showcasing Intricate  sonic tapestries layering samples,  further exploring and unearthing loops and musical phrases off dusty media otherwise long forgotten.
